Central Texas College (CTC) recently announced Annabelle Smith, associate dean – Veteran Services and Financial Aid, was the recipient of the 2020 Texas Association of Collegiate Veteran Program Officials (TACVPO) Excellence award. The award was created to honor all veteran education specialists who have demonstrated excellent delivery of service and compassion for veteran and military-connected students.
TACVPO was established more than 40 years ago for the benefit of staff members at educational institutions across Texas who provide assistance to veterans and their family members using veterans’ benefits from the state of Texas or the Department of Veteran's Affairs. To recognize an outstanding member, the TACVPO award was developed in 2018. The nomination criteria include providing dedicated service in the veteran services community for five or more years, has attended three or more TACVPO conferences and has provided support for the military connected community veterans in education.
The organization also uses its letters as an acronym to describe some of the characteristics of award nominees: T - tenacious, A - attention to details, C - contribution to veteran service community, V - veteran-friendly, P - professional and O - outstanding, goes above and beyond to provide superior service their students and community.
Smith has been employed with CTC for 41 years and served two terms as TACVPO president from 1984-1986. She was to receive the award at the organization’s annual conference which was cancelled last month. “This award means a lot because it was voted on by the membership,” said Smith. “I have made many friends over the years with members and VA staff.” Kelly Murphy, TACVPO president, said, “For this excellence award, there is one person that came to our minds instantly. This person comes to every conference, has served on the board for an extremely long time and has worked in veteran services for 41 years.”
