A number of changes are being proposed for the City of Wichita Falls Charter.

According to the Times Record News, the charter is basically a constitution for the city, and offers a structure for the local government’s regular operations. City Attorney Kinley Hegglund said the document explains how the municipality operates.

“We can basically set out the rules in which Wichita Falls government will operate going forward,” Hegglund said.

There are several changes that will be made to the document.

Among the changes recommended is the idea to remove the reference to city employees, as Hegglund believes that the city manager and department heads provide enough of a checkpoint for employees. It has been recommended that the terms in office be lengthened from two to three years. Salary increases are also being considered as there have been no changes to salaries for the mayor and council members since 1988.

All of the recommendations will be reviewed and decided upon in August, and then placed on the November ballot to be voted on by the public.
