CITY OF WICHITA FALL: City of Wichita Falls and Lake Wichita Revitalization Committee celebrated the new boardwalk with a ribbon cutting ceremony!

Grandopening436

City of Wichita Fall issued the following announcement on July 10

Today the City of Wichita Falls and Lake Wichita Revitalization Committee celebrated the new boardwalk with a ribbon cutting ceremony! The project was funded in part by the Local Park Grants which are administered through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The Kimbell Foundation and Bridwell Foundation both generously donated the remaining amount of funding in order to complete the project. Construction on the project began in November of 2019 and was completed in May of 2020.

When originally built in 1901, Lake Wichita was at that time, just the third man-made lake in Texas. In 1904, lands were granted for a public road to the lake. Shortly after Joseph Kemp, a local businessman and promoter of Wichita Falls, developed amusements near the lake including a pavilion, hotel, race track, baseball park, rides, boating, picnicking and summer cottages. The location for the new boardwalk was chosen specifically, as it is near where the original boardwalk once was. To this day, there are still original boardwalk pylons that are intact and visible. The newly completed boardwalk is approximately 155 feet long, made of all-weather material and is officially open for public use!
