State Senate candidate Drew Springer looks forward to pushing for a change in the tax code toward a consumption tax, a Republican Party plank that he said would cut property taxes in half.

Springer hopes to replace now state Sen. Pat Fallon in the state's 30th district. Fallon won the congressional seat previously held by Jon Ratcliffe, who now serves as President Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence. Gov. Greg Abbott set Sept. 29 for the special election to fill the seat.

Springer touted his A+ rating by the National Rifle Association and said the legislature needs to strengthen Second Amendment rights.

“We’re going to talk about the Second Amendment. We're going to talk about taxes. We're going to talk about the things that I think will show that I am ready to go day one and understand the policies that affect a district,” Springer said on the Mark Davis Show.

On the podcast host’s questions about Abbott’s performance with the COVID-19 pandemic, Springer said like any relationship, there will be differences of opinion.

“Hey, look, I've been married for 29 years. Love of my life, and I don't always agree with Lydia,” Springer said on the podcast.

Springer answered questions from Davis about his opponent in the special election, Shelly Luther. Luther is the salon owner who was jailed for refusing to close her hair salon under a Dallas County judge’s order. Springer said the judge was out of line, and that he asked Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton what could be done.

What Springer said he believes his 20 years of working with the Republican Party and the conservative movement makes him a stronger candidate to get things done in Austin.

He doesn’t always agree with the governor, but said when he does, he picks up the phone and they discuss it. Afterward Springer said he can see that Abbott has listened.

“So I look forward to continuing to work with the governor,” Springer told the Mark Davis Show. “You know, he's done a phenomenal job of outreach across the whole state and making sure that everybody is represented. And I look forward to continue with him on that as all of this moves forward.”
