In a partnership with Baylor University, Bowie ISD supplied more than 142,000 meals to 476 households between March and August in the Emergency Meals to You program.
The Baylor University Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and public and private organizations, served more than 38.7 million meals to more than 270,00 children affected by the pandemic.
Meal to You expanded a pilot program in 2019 at the request of the USDA. The program grew from serving 4,000 Texas students to 270,483 student sin 43 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.
“Without access to school lunch programs, public transportation and other resources, households in some of the country’s hardest hit communities were left scrambling for ways to replace much needed meal resources,” Jeremy Everett, BCHP executive director, told Bowie ISD.
Everett said building strategic public and private partnerships to tackle hunger is key, and BCHP used existing partnerships with Hunger Solutions, PepsiCo’s Food for Good and Chartwells.
“Participation in this program was a vital part of our overall efforts to address the serious needs of our district’s families during this pandemic,” Wayne Walker, director of Support Services for Bowie ISD, said.
